Useful Links

Here are some links to items I think maybe of some interest, particularly recent writings of mine that have yet to find a published home. Personally, I think they are worthwhile contributions, although often enough editors have thought otherwise. I don’t work very hard at getting things published.

Emergency Technocentrism

This is an article I wrote jointly with Professor Stephen Peake of the Open University, with whom I have often collaborated. It argues against life-style changes as the principal route to decarbonisation, and in favour of large-scale technical changes to infrastructure.

KAYA PLUS AND MINUS: A simple extension of the Kaya Identity to provide robust first-order checks of emission-reduction policies

This is also written jointly with Stephen Peake. It proposes a simple extension of the Kaya Indentity to track carbon emissions from all sources, and to model alternatives.

Demanding the Impossible

This is a warts ‘n all look at the history of the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, where I worked for thirty years. It charts a heroic attempt to follow ‘alternative’ principles in all dimensions, culminating in a collapse and partial reversal.
